Encapsulation may be defined as a process of trapping a substance (called active) within microparticles with a diameter ranging from a few nanometers to a few millimeters. There are two main types of microcapsules, namely the type of reservoir and the type of matrix. The reservoir consists of one or more cores containing the active surrounded by a shell or a coating. The active agent in the matrix is completely dispersed on the carrier material.
Encapsulation immobilizes, protects, controls release, structures and makes the encapsulated asset functional. It is used in most industrial and personal fields, including pharmacy, biomedicine, food, cosmetics, agriculture, chemistry, detergency … The market is estimated at tens of billions of euros per year with a growing market of 10% per year. The production varies from a few grams to several thousand tons depending on the applications.
The Bioencapsulation Research Group was established in 1991 to promote research, development and commercial activities in the field of micro- and bio-encapsulation. It registered as a French non-profit association in 1993. The BRG encourages exchanges between researchers, between researchers and industries and between industries. The BRG organizes conferences, workshops, training schools and industrial conventions (or trade fairs). It is the heart of varioun European Networks, namely the COST 840 and 865 actions, or the European space Agency Topical thematic team on microencapsulation.
Registration at BRG is free. To become member, simply register on http://bioencapsulation.net, attend one of our meetings or provide us your name, address and email by any means (business card, email, ...).
BRG is managed by a steering committee appointed at the General Assembly, which usually takes place during the BRG's annual meeting. The steering committee is composed of a president, a vice-president (editor in chief), a treasurer, a secretary and local organizers of future events.
