4th conference on Innovations in Encapsulation, 13/12/2019, London, UK

The Formulation Science and Technology group (FSTG) of the Royal Society of Chemistry is pleased to announce that it is planning to hold its 4th confe ence on Innovations in Encapsulation on Dec 13th in Burlington House, Piccadilly, London. This year we also will be including the very sensitive topic of creating biodegradable microbeads together with routes to making self-healing concrete. The conference will be of great interest to academics who will be providing us with an insight into their innovations in this field either via the oral presentation of a paper or through the submission of a poster. These presentations and posters will be of great interest to industrialists who may find that this conference opens up new areas of collaboration between them and the academics. Once again, we have deliberately extended the conference day by allowing time for networking at the end supported by additional seasonal refreshments. The deadline for abstracts submission for the oral presentations has been set for May 31st. Abstracts for posters should be received by Sept 30th. There have been nearly 100 delegates at each of the previous London conferences.

Valorization of by-products for the development of functional ingredients, foods and nutraceuticals, 24-26/06/2019, Verona, Italy

The growing interest for the establishment of a circular economy model to reduce the production of wastes forces to investigate novel approaches and t chnologies for the valorization of the by-products inevitably produced along with the supply chains. Agriculture and food processing industries produce a multitude of by-products still containing different valuable substances. These by-products are in the form of liquid, pomace, or powder and can be obtained by processing fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, seafoods, milk and dairy products, cereals, nuts, fats, and oils. Biotransformation and green extraction technologies and approaches are being more and more investigated to recover added-value substances, such as proteins and amino acids, polysaccharides, polyphenols, carotenoids, dietary fiber etc. These mostly represent nutraceuticals and functional ingredients that can be exploited for the design of innovative functional foods. The summer school will deal with the most up-to-date notions in the field of food by-products valorization applied to the development of functional ingredients, foods and nutraceuticals. In the contest of Villa Lebrecht, in San Floriano (Verona nearby), the students will attend talks given by experts in this field focusing on different aspects of the topics. A poster session and flash presentations of the contributions of the participants will represent important parts of the School. Selected students will be recipient of a reimbursement of travel costs. Social events will be also considered to give the participants the opportunity for networking.

Microencapsulation short course, June 18-20, 2019, Leeds, UK

his course covers the basic science and engineering of microencapsulation across a wide range of applications including the important stages of emulsi ication control, stability and release property control. Whilst the majority of the course involves emulsions, multiple emulsions and particle coating, we also provide a comprehensive description of the range of characterisation tools and their applicability. The emphasis is on understanding the fundamental behaviour of the interactions of the various components in such complex systems. This should provide the basis for a rational approach to formulating and producing micro encapsulates to meet a range of needs. The course offers a programme of academic and industry cooperation taking delegates from the basic science through to manufactured products. The Microencapsulation course is relevant to scientists and engineers in the chemical, petroleum, polymers, coatings, inks, food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and general chemical industries with responsibility for R&D projects, process engineering, manufacturing or product formulation involving incorporating micro-encapsulates into formulated products.

PhD in Seafood Science and Technology is looking for a Postdoctoral position in Encapsulation of bioactive materials

I have PhD in Seafood Science and Technology from Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources of Iran, and I am looking for a pos doctoral or assistant researcher position in Encapsulation of bioactive materials for fortifying food products. During my PhD studies, I optimised the encapsulation of fish protein hydrolysate and fish oil in the complexes of protein (whey protein concentrate) and carbohydrates (Inulin and Fucoidan) as wall materials using double emulsion by freeze- and spray dryer, under the supervision of Prof. Bahareh Shabanpour. I was extracted the fish protein hydrolysate (from underutilised fish) and Fucoidan (from brown seaweed) and we fortified the yogurt using the obtained microcapsules. I have been trained under supervision of Prof. Trinidad Pérez Palacios and Prof. Teresa Antequera Rojas for a period of 9 months through the project from the Spanish Ministry: Advance in the study of the microencapsulation of omega-3 fatty acid to enrich meat products. I am highly motivated, hard-working, creative individual who works well independently as well as collaboratively on teams of scientists from diverse backgrounds.

Emulsification and encapsulation by soft matter techniques, ACS Fall Meeting, San Diego, 25-29 August 2019

The soft matter community is working actively on the generation of new types of colloids, i.e. nanoparticles of interesting actives (drugs, tracers, b omolecules of any sorts) or nanocapsules integrating these in their core. Different soft techniques exist nowadays to perform so, including spontaneous emulsification (of any kind) or emulsion polymerization, to prepare e.g. polymersomes or nanostructured particles, respectively. The release of the active, either through natural or targeted degradation, or by an external trigger, is also a field of constant discovery and interest. This ACS fall meeting session aims at gathering under the same scope biologist, pharmacologists, chemists and physicists interested in the protection and release of any types of actives as well as the formation of structure colloids. We will cover the preparation, the characterization and application of these small objects and structured colloids in a range of applications including agro, cosmetic, food or pharmaceutical applications.
